SUBJECT: Increasing Cultural Arts Media Coverage in West Michigan
OVERVIEW: West Michigan’s leading entertainment and business publications want to work with the region’s cultural arts organizations to re-energize local news coverage of West Michigan’s vibrant arts scene.
Dear Cultural Arts Leader:
As you are aware, there has been a drastic reduction in local arts reporting in recent months with staff cuts and reduced operations at MLIVE, On-the-Town and other media organizations.
We would like to work with you to fill that void and increase coverage of the arts through a new journalism initiative anchored by Revue West Michigan and MiBiz. The two publications reach nearly 220,000 readers each month with print, digital and e-newsletters distributed throughout the region. Coverage and circulation areas for both publication include the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Saugatuck, Holland, Grand Haven and Muskegon areas.
We are planning to launch a West Michigan Cultural Arts coverage team of reporters, critics and multi-media specialists. The team’s goal would be simple: to highlight the entire region’s rich cultural arts scene 52 weeks a year. We plan to have the team:
- Preview shows and exhibits presented by local arts organizations
- Review performances and exhibits on opening night
- Create feature stories, videos and podcasts about artists, performers and arts executives
- Cover the “business news” and institutional news of local arts groups
- Establish an active social media presence highlighting local arts news
- Help facilitate and moderate “the conversation” about the arts in West Michigan
Stories will appear in the print editions of Revue and MiBiz, as well as through a variety of daily web updates, daily social media posts and weekly e-newsletters. We’ll also be actively pushing content on the web with RSS feeds, SEO/SEM and sponsored posts on social media sites.
We need your help to make this happen. We are trying to obtain $100,000 in advertising or sponsorship commitments by June 30, 2016 to make this happen. We are about halfway to the goal at this point, but need broad-based support from as many West Michigan cultural arts organizations as possible to make this happen. In return, we’ll be extending our editorial reach in order to cover what’s going on at as many arts groups as possible.
