From Los Angeles to Chicago and Madison, Wis., the Grand Rapids Improv Festival is bringing in performers from all across the country.

Throughout the week-long festival, nearly 40 troupes will travel in and out of Dog Story Theater in Grand Rapids for a wide variety of performances.

When comedian Demetri Martin comes to Grand Rapids this month on his Let’s Get Awkward tour, longtime fans should know that among his many new jokes, he also hopes to share some more personal stories.

The ‘Not-Too-Bad’ Comedy of Brian Regan

Written by Eric Mitts | Wednesday, 30 August 2017 16:28 |

OK, let’s get one thing straight when it comes to stand-up comedian Brian Regan: His birthday is actually June 2 — not Oct. 2 like the internet might lead his friends and fans to believe.

“I have a good friend who always calls me on Oct. 2 to wish me a happy birthday, because that’s my Wikipedia birthday, and I never corrected him because I always got a kick out of it,” Regan said. “It’s nice for me, because I get two birthdays out of it. I get my actual birthday on June 2 and then I get my Wikipedia birthday.”

If there’s one thing that’s true for moms, it’s that they could all use a good night out.

Thankfully, comedians/viral video sensations Kristin Hensley and Jen Smedley — of the top-trending Web series #IMOMSOHARD — are here to help.

Now best-known as the host of CNN’s Emmy-nominated docuseries United Shades of America, sociopolitical comedian and community activist W. Kamau Bell wants to make people learn as well as laugh. Himself included.

Humor in Numbers: Funny Girls creates comedy by women, for everyone

Written by Eric Mitts | Wednesday, 01 March 2017 10:55 |

There was a time, only a few years ago, when the Grand Rapids Improv Festival didn’t have a single all-female group in its lineup.

Taking note, a group of women came together in 2015 to fill that void with Funny Girls, a mixed-media collective of female-identifying comedians, writers, bloggers, vloggers and more.

On the Road Again: Stephen Lynch

Written by Dwayne Hoover | Tuesday, 07 February 2017 09:40 |

On a random Wednesday in December, I decided to meander down to Louie's Trophy House Grill to participate in Open Mic Night, not having done so for months. After ordering the first of my standard Bell's Two Hearted Ale pre-game beers, I sat down with host Megan Dooley to chit-chat for a bit and catch up on life. But before too long, she let me in on this particular night's little secret.
