October Eclectic: Grand Rapids Comic-Con; Steven Pinker; Halloween on Ionia

Until this year, Grand Rapids was the largest city in the nation without a comic convention, according to Grand Rapids Comic-Con event founder Mark Hodges. Fanboy, con-enthusiast and owner of Rivertown Entertainment, Hodges has set out to bring a Comic-Con to the people, in a big way.

Summer breezes have faded, ladies are donning thigh-high socks and somewhere, Frank Sinatra is crooning "September Song." This month is all about lamenting summer's end and relishing the season change, so rev your engines, stomp grapes, spit blood and escape to Armadillo Acres.

What once might have been the mark of dirty hippies and vagabonds seems to have quite suddenly evolved into a pop culture fashion statement. Speaking of the you've-probably-never-heard-of-it-before hipster culture in particular, young folks have recently adopted the iconic and ironically overused mustache as one of its identifiers.

Sometimes things get so hot they combust. Like a Phoenix, BlackLamb rises from the ashes where Lamb in Grand Rapids closes its doors. The reincarnation is part store/part studio with emphasis on owner Ryann Lambay’s jewelry line, candles and selections that are, “a lot more intentional with fewer categories but better items,” according to Manager Marissa Kulha.

In early-June, American music and cultural magazine Rolling Stone devoted a whole issue to marijuana. While historically a counter-cultural bastion and a magazine that often writes about weed, a whole issue devoted to the subject seems significant.
