February Indie Film: WMEAC Closes Out 2014-2015 Film Series with Watermark

OK, West Michigan. Again we find ourselves nearing the tail-end of winter, but not quite yet at the cusp of spring. Yes, we are stuck smack dab in that awkward liminal state commonly referred to as February. Don't fret, though. Whether you find yourself alone on Valentine's Day or are trying to shake off the feeling of an ominous Groundhog's Day fortune, West Michigan film will always be there to help console you. Check out some of these local screenings to help ward off the end-of-winter blues.

It's a new year, which means avid film fans everywhere are already busy picking out their most anticipated releases for 2015. And while it's easy to get caught up in the next Hollywood blockbuster and the next big-budget Oscar sensation, we at Revue would like to remind our readers to keep an eye out for independent and local films.

With last year's infamous polar vortex looming fresh in West Michigan's collective conscious, it's safe to say some locals are entering into the winter season with a sense of apprehension. Sledding and making snowmen are fun and all, but so is being able to actually get out of your driveway in the morning. To soothe your worries about the impending blizzards, why not take a trip to the theatre and lose yourself in some seasonal cinema? 

This month households across America sit down and make a list of everything they're thankful for. We here at Revue are no exception, and have written our own list. Grandma? Check. Pizza? You betcha. Michigan-made movies? Hell yes!

When October comes around, it's time for all of the freaks, ghouls and creatures of all stripes to come out of hiding in West Michigan and celebrate the best holiday of them all – Halloween. And what better way to celebrate than with our friends at the Thriller! Chiller! Film Festival?

We're quickly coming to the close of summer and entering into the film industry limbo that arrives between the summer blockbuster and holiday film season. But not to worry, film fans. Independent cinema is still booming in West Michigan.

It's been a good summer for films in Michigan. Countless exciting projects are being produced and released, a plethora of film festivals showcased some of the best cinema independent film has to offer, and our friends at Thriller! Chiller! announced some exciting changes for their festival. Well, it's now August, and while summer festivities may be winding down in the next month or so, the Michigan film industry shows no signs of slowing down.

Media Luna acquires Grand Rapids-based director's film “Buzzard”

The black comedy Buzzard has been picked up by international sales company Media Luna for worldwide distribution. Buzzard is Grand Rapids-based director Joel Potrykus' latest and final piece in his “animal trilogy." The film was recently scooped up by Oscilloscope Laboratories for US distribution before premiering at SXSW.

Everyone loves a good summer sunset over Lake Michigan, and stargazing from a comfy campsite can't be beat. If you're looking to watch something a bit more cinematic, however, the West Michigan film community has got you covered, too.

Let's face it – everyone loves summer. There's the new-found freedom from academic obligations, plenty of chances to soak up that vitamin D and of course, miles of immaculate beachfront on the West Michigan coast. For hardcore film fans though, it can be a tenuous time.
