One problem our planet faces every day is a definitive lack of truly great jazz keyboardists. Is this dearth of instrument-specific talent a greater threat to the survival of humanity than, say, the clean water shortage? Well, probably not, but still, it’s nice to look at accomplished members of our society to gauge just how far we’ve come as a species. And that’s where Chick Corea comes in. Known for wielding a keyboard like Katniss Everdeen pointing an arrow at a grouse, the septuagenarian legend is still going strong after a whopping 40-odd years in the business of show. Known for producing a particularly vibrant blend of jazz-fusion and Latin-influenced rock, Corea has the distinction of being nominated for no less than 61 Grammys, making him the fourth most nominated artist IN HISTORY. Really, what greater monument to human achievement do you need than that? And don’t say “the moon landing” – after all, Corea was going strong well before the Apollo 11 mission ever lifted off the ground.
