Welcome to February, one of the best, strangest months of the year.
With just 28 days, it’s the runt of the litter — except for the occasional leap year, when February stands on its tippy-toes and reaches for the stars. 2020 is one such year, which is cool, but leap years also have their downsides, if we’re being honest.
Say your birthday was on Friday last year. This year, you might be excited for it to land on Saturday — objectively the best day for a birthday — but now it leaps right ahead to Sunday. No one wants to party on a Sunday!
But enough about my problems, let’s look to the week ahead. Early February is quiet as people brace for winter weather, but there’s still plenty to do.
Here’s what’s on our radar:
Concerts Under the Stars: Coffin Problem
Grand Rapids Public Museum
272 Pearl St. NW, Grand Rapids
Feb. 6, 7:30 p.m.
If you haven’t been to the planetarium in a while, this is the perfect reason to head back. Concerts Under the Stars brings local musicians to the museum along with a local video artist creating a shifting visual experience in real time. It’s extra special with a band like Coffin Problem, a loud, atmospheric, “cavernous and cathartic” rock group that will launch you to the stars.
Nikki Glaser: Bang It Out
20 Monroe Live
11 Ottawa Ave. NW, Grand Rapids
Feb. 7, 6 p.m.
Nikki Glaser is one of the hardest working comedians out there, finding huge success with her debut Netflix special, Bangin’. Her new tour, Bang It Out, continues the streak of no-holds-barred comedy about her most intimate moments, and it’s coming to 20 Monroe Live. To learn more about her tour and life as a busy comedian, read our Q&A with Glaser here.
Downtown Market Ice Bar
435 Ionia Ave. SW, Grand Rapids
If you’re going to head outside in winter, you should have a drink in-hand. The Downtown Market is opening its outdoor space for thirsty adventurers who want to have a drink and play some games before heading inside for food. The huge bar made of ice has craft beers, specialty cocktails — including hot cider with apple whiskey — and more. You can hit the Drink-o ice sculpture to choose a mystery beverage or, if you’re really cold, head to the ice luge for a shot of Fireball!
Cabin Fever Pop-Up
1504 Plainfield Ave. NE, Grand Rapids
Feb. 8, 12-8 p.m.
Have Cabin Fever? Get out of that stupid cabin!!! Head to Boop de Boom Coffee Lounge inside Creston Brewery for special drink features (both alcoholic and not) alongside 13 artists and vendors. You’ll find woodwork, quilted goods, prints, clothing and more. Solstice Handmade is also hosting workshops, including Reusable Gift Wrap 101 and Valentine’s Day Card Making Bonanza.
The Lumineers: III World Tour
Van Andel Arena
130 W. Fulton St., Grand Rapids
Feb. 11, 7 p.m.
The Lumineers are one of the biggest folk rock bands in the world, and for good reason. Their hits have spanned from the bright, hand-clapping, foot-stomping Ho Hey to their new album, which dives deep into addiction across generations. Read all about it in our interview with the lead singer, then head to this much-anticipated show at Van Andel.
