Summer’s here and the heat is too.

Honestly, though, this is Michigan — the weather is a rollercoaster no matter the season. And when it comes to summer treats, your appetite is going to be totally different depending on whether it’s 65 and cloudy or 95 and humid.

Luckily, West Michigan has all the bases covered! There’s a treat for every heat, and we’re here to guide you.

 BREEZY

Mosby’s Popcorn
15 Ionia Ave. SW, Grand Rapids

You’re out and about, enjoying a cool summer day, but it’s far from “hot.” You need a light treat that won’t make you even a degree colder: popcorn. Mosby’s in downtown Grand Rapids is the Noah’s Ark of flavors — they have it all. Sweet flavors include Birthday Cake, Cheesecake, Cinnamon French Toast, Salted Caramel and more!

 PLEASANT

Malamiah Juice Bar
122 Oakes St. SW, Grand Rapids

It’s a nice day, pretty much perfect! All you need is some delicious, nutritious juice, and Malamiah has the goods. Start your day with a Rise & Shine, made with orange, ginger, carrot and red apple. While you’re at it, grab a booster shot for extra flavor and health benefits. Then lie down in the piazza outside and soak up the sun.

Grand Rapids Cheesecake Company
2255 Alpine Ave. NW, Grand Rapids

Despite many mistaken Google Reviews, this is no “Factory” — the GR Cheesecake Company has a secret recipe that brings the magic to their fresh-made cheesecakes every day. This fluffy, luxurious dessert is chilled, but you’re in no danger of a brain freeze. Stop in for a slice of Oreo cheesecake and a cannoli.

 SHORTS AND TEES

Fruition Acai & Juice Bar
1405 Lake Dr. SE, Grand Rapids

Acai bowls are a work of genius — you get to eat something that basically tastes like ice cream but it’s healthier, covered in fresh fruit and granola, and counts as a meal. It’s a win win win.

Fruition’s acai bowls are top-of-the-line and filled to the brim. My personal favorite is the Sub-yo, with acai, Greek yogurt, granola, almond butter, raspberry, blueberry, pineapple, banana, chia seeds and hemp seeds. Pretty sure if I ate one of those every day, I’d never die.*

 IT’S HOT

Mayan Buzz Café
Multiple locations

Alright, time to cool down! Mayan Buzz has tons of frozen coffee drinks, which are great for both cooling down and amping up. Try the frozen Butter Beer, a latte with caramel, cinnamon and hazelnut. While you’re at it, grab a Churro Donut, topped with ice cream.

Palazzolo’s Artisan Dairy
4gelato.com

You’re most likely to find Palazzolo’s products in a local grocery store, but you can also order it straight to your door. Their specialty is gelato, a milk-based frozen dessert that’s denser and richer than ice cream. It’s also served at a slightly warmer temperature than ice cream, making it great for a hot day that isn’t scorching. Get decadent with a bold flavor like White Chocolate Raspberry gelato, or keep it classic with Tahitian Vanilla. You really can’t go wrong.

Barry G’s Italian Ice
3555 68th St. SE, Dutton

Sorbet, sorbetto, Italian ice — whatever you want to call it, we love it. This stuff has no dairy at all, and is simply made with frozen fruit! Not only is it one of the healthiest sweet treats around, but it’s delicious and refreshing. Italian ice will undoubtedly cool you down, and Barry G’s is the real deal, just opening a storefront recently! And I’ll let you in on a little secret: They have great ice cream too. Buon appetito!

 POSITIVELY SCORCHING

Love’s Ice Cream
435 Ionia Ave. SW, Grand Rapids

There are a million amazing ice cream spots, but if you’re truly sweltering, we figured you might want to step into the Downtown Market and enjoy your treat in the A/C. Nothing cools you down like ice cream, between the dairy, the fact it’s so cold and whatever other frozen bits lie within. The shop’s flavors change all the time but you can find Love’s in stores. When I need to cool down, I go for the Almond Toffee Crunch, because it gives me energy too! If you’re avoiding dairy, they’ve got you covered too: Try the new Frosé Sorbet, which comes in at 5% ABV thanks to California rosé, mixed with strawberry, raspberry, cherry and pear. NOW summer has arrived.
