Beer, bikes and building: A trio made in heaven

Written by Nick Manes | Wednesday, 25 May 2016 11:07 |

Cycling followed by a beer may not be a new combination, but a May 26 event in Grand Rapids will bring the two even closer together.

The Local Trades Alley Cat bike race, a free event designed for riders of all experience levels, will take attendees to venues all over the city, from bars and restaurants to construction company headquarters.
At each stop, riders will receive a hole punch in their card, and at the conclusion of the race, riders with the most punches have the most opportunities for prizes through a raffle.

Not even a mile from what was once the Gold Dollar, the dive-bar launching pad of endless beers and garage bands in the mid-to-late ’90s, Jack White’s Third Man Records will open a Detroit branch of its Nashville-based operations. But it’s not just the Gold Dollar that is within a mile. “It’s the Freezer, the Bronx Bar, the First Unitarian Church, Cobbs Corner, the original Creem Magazine headquarters, the Old Miami,” points out Ben Blackwell, a honcho at Third Man and nephew to Third Man creator Jack White.

Classic Stereo Returns to Grand Rapids

Written by Rich Tupica | Friday, 04 September 2015 13:09 |

For 26 years Classic Stereo was a hi-fi fixture in West Michigan. Then, following the economic recession, the retail outlet closed in 2008 – but the story doesn’t end there. The audio/visual electronics retailer, which previously had locations in both Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, is now prepping for a comeback in Grand Rapids.

Milwaukee-based Americana songwriter Peter Mulvey, who’s no stranger to the West Michigan music scene, sat down on Friday and wrote a new song in a basement dressing room at the Calvin Theatre in Northhampton, Mass. The song, “Take Down Your Flag,” is a direct narrative on the tragic Charleston, S. Car. church shooting and the accompanying push to remove the confederate flag from the state’s capitol.
