The hardcore/screamo scene in West Michigan has taken its share of hits over the years. With all ages-centric venues like Skelletones, MXTP and The DAAC going under, there are few places left for these bands to throw down in. We've even seen a drop in the DIY-style shows that take over local VFW halls.
But, don't worry...the scene is still alive and kicking, and Grand Rapids-based Divided They Fall is doing its part to keep it that way. With relentless guerrilla-style promotion and a clear passion for all things metal/hardcore, the band has become ambassadors for a West Michigan scene that has given birth to national heavyweights like Sleeping With Sirens and La Dispute.
"It is really tough to get shows nowadays being a local band; most of the time, you take what you can get and you play your best and never give up," said Derek LaFountain, bassist for Divided They Fall.
LaFountain and the rest of the guys are heading into the pre-production phase for their upcoming full-length album, which will be dropping sometime in 2014. Along with that, LaFountain said the band is also focused on writing new music, and hopes to break out of Michigan next year to spread their hard-hitting tunes.
Meanwhile, the band seems to be maintaining a moderately busy show schedule, which includes a stop at The Intersection on Friday, Nov. 1 for the 7th Annual Harvest of Souls, sponsored by Wicked Ways Tattooing. They'll share the stage with a laundry list of like-minded rockers.
By LaFountain's assessment, hardcore music isn't necessarily the under aged-only crowd it has generally been known for in the past.
"All sorts of different people (come out to the shows)," he said. "We've seen a wide variety between younger and older. But overall, they're the most respectable and positive people and just all around great people."
