The past year has pushed many of us to make big changes, including buying a home.
Entering the world of real estate for the first time can be intimidating, however. The process is complex and can be expensive, but there are plenty of local businesses that are here to help.
We’re not here to write the book on buying your first home, but this is a good place to start.
FIND THE HOME. You could spend weeks driving around town and browsing Zillow, or you could work with a real estate agent and let their expertise do the work. You’re ideally looking for a house that fits your price range but could use a bit of work, so you can increase the home’s value yourself. A good agent will also help you connect to quality service providers.
Local Agents: iheartGR, 616 Realty, Blu House Properties, Greensquare Properties, Jaqua Realtors, and many more.
BUY THE HOME. It’s a seller’s market right now, meaning you’ll be competing with a lot of people. You want to be prepared, with a good agent and plenty of funds. Luckily, there are resources out there to help.
Connect with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) if you’re a first-time buyer. The name might not be sexy, but they can help you with an interest-free down-payment loan, hugely lowering your upfront costs.
Also, interest rates are at an all-time-low, and you typically only need 3% down!
INSURE THE HOME. Some people just bundle their homeowners insurance in with their car insurance, but you probably want to shop around. Rates, rewards, services, coverage — they’re almost all better when you go with a local company.
Local Agents: Coldbrook Insurance Group, Brouwers Agency, Lambert Family Agency, Bye Financial Group, and many more.
DECORATE THE HOME. If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past year, it’s that we want our home to be comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. If there’s a second thing we’ve learned, it’s that we could use some help making that happen. Luckily, interior designers exist!
An interior designer thinks about how to make your space both beautiful and functional, working with your vision to craft the home you see in your dreams. They can simply help guide you, or become far more hands-on.
Local Designers: Atmosphere 360 Studio Interiors LLC, Jennifer Butler Design, Deidre Interiors, Studio M and many more.
