TRACK OF THE WEEK: "Giants Dreaming" by Velcrofibs

“Post Alternative Indie Experimental Rock” may be a mouthful to say, but this complex genreical label is more than just a classification for the guys of Grand Rapids-based, Velcrofibs. Commonly seen in today’s underground music scene, more bands are discovering ways to reinvent sounds, especially this quintet who successfully use musical experimentation to showcase their own stylistic musical ability.

Joey Frankovich is the band’s lead vocalist, with Jordan Peterson, Chucky Blackmore and Andrew Zwart on strings and Graham Lince on the drumkit. Together, these five close friends challenge mainstream habits of adhering to a single genre with the use of a variety of instruments to produce an array of reverberations.

Within the few months since the debut of their album City in Your Sleep, the band has seen a growth in their fan base, as their sound can easily be compared to that of popular alternative bands like Explosions in the Sky and Young the Giant.

You can catch the guys of Velcrofibs at Calvin College inside The Cave Café on April 24, but for now, go ahead and grab a taste of our featured track of the week, “Giants Dreaming.” It’s a song with a slow tease, leading to an all-out electric guitar solo behind Frankovich’s vocals; Or simplistically, an acoustic track with a hint of rock soul.
