Rock Best Bet: Rush

Written by Emma Kat Richardson | Thursday, 23 May 2013 11:49 |

Rush has been doing what it does for as long as anyone old enough to possess a driver's license can remember, and then some. Consistent, stellar, outstanding – it makes sense that the Canadian prog-rock superstars would christen their latest tour the "Clockwork Angels Tour," because really, what other gang of dad-rock legends run so reliably and blessedly?

Indie Best Bet: Ra Ra Riot

Written by Emma Kat Richardson | Thursday, 23 May 2013 11:45 |

Any modern sub-culture group described as "baroque pop" has to be a class act, if not a classical act (look at that, a Bach joke!). Without exception, Ra Ra Riot brings heaps of class like you wouldn't believe.

Folk Best Bet: Brandi Carlile

Written by Lindsay Patton-Carson | Thursday, 23 May 2013 11:42 |

Some fun facts about Brandi Carlile: She has The Neverending Story tattoos on her shoulders, she was a backup singer for an Elvis impersonator, her latest album is named after Bear Creek studio.

Comedy: Bill Maher

Written by Emma Kat Richardson | Thursday, 23 May 2013 11:39 |

Basically, all you need to know about Bill Maher is that he's just the best. Literally. He is your BEST BET. I would probably form a religion around him if it weren't for ...well, you can probably already surmise the flaw in this logic without my offering a sarcastic explanation.

Americana Best Bet: Willie Nelson

Written by Emma Kat Richardson | Friday, 26 April 2013 09:59 |

Call me crazy, but I'm beginning to think that Willie Nelson is even more indestructible than Cher. He just has that freshly survived-from-the-apocalypse gleam about him, you know?

Indie Rock Best Bet: MGMT

Written by Emma Kat Richardson | Friday, 26 April 2013 09:59 |

If psychedelic rock began and ended with the '60s, don't tell the members of MGMT. As one of America's favorite breakout bands of the last few years, the band has been managing to carry on the flag of neo-psychedelia well into the 21st century.

Comedy Best Bet: Aziz Ansari

Written by Emma Kat Richardson | Friday, 26 April 2013 09:56 |

"Parks & Recreation" may be on the verge of taking its summer hiatus (though, thank the TV gods, not a permanent hiatus like its big sister,"30 Rock"), but that doesn't mean its principle stars have withered and died like newscasters without a working teleprompter.

Comedy Best Bet: Ralphie May

Written by Emma Kat Richardson | Friday, 22 March 2013 15:56 |

Yes, Ralphie May is a hilarious comedian. Yes, he's also a "Last Comic Standing" superstar. And yes, he's perhaps just a little bit rotund. But did you know that he also performed at the Gathering of the Juggalos this past year?!

Festival Best Bet: Festival of Faith and Music

Written by Emma Kat Richardson | Friday, 22 March 2013 11:00 |

Having just now reached its 10th year in existence, Calvin College's biennial Festival of Faith and Music has really outdone itself this year in terms of lineup, sponsorship, workshops, and lineup. Oh, did we mention the lineup really kicks a whole lotta faith-based booty, too?

Eclectic Best Bet: Henry Rollins

Written by Lindsay Patton-Carson | Friday, 22 March 2013 10:57 |

While James Franco may be known for publicizing the whole modern-Renaissance-man thing, Henry Rollins did it while Franco was learning cursive. Though he'll always be affectionately known as Black Flag's frontman, Rollins did his own thing (or more appropriately, "things") when he left the band in 1986.
