Shelley Irwin Fun Run Returns to Millennium Park for a Day of Community, Movement, and a Few Four-Legged Friends

On Saturday, April 25, the Shelley Irwin Fun Run returns to Millennium Park in Grand Rapids, inviting runners, walkers, families, and dogs to a morning celebrating movement, community, and local public media.

The event, inspired by longtime WGVU radio host Shelley Irwin, is welcoming and accessible to all. Participants can choose a non-timed 5K Fun Run or a 2-Mile Community Walk. There is also a 1-Mile Dog Walk, a Kids Run, and a Virtual 5K. Whether running, walking, pushing a stroller, or walking your dog, the goal is simple: join in, move, and be part of something positive.

The dog walk is expected to be a highlight, with wagging tails and neighbors enjoying the morning together in Millennium Park.

This year’s event also marks Shelley Irwin’s 25 years at WGVU, honoring her legacy of local storytelling and connection in West Michigan. The Fun Run embodies her philosophy of movement, goal setting, and community.

“My passion is movement and setting goals that keep me energized in every part of my life,” said Shelley Irwin. “After 25 years on the air at WGVU, I’ve been running toward community, connection, and great storytelling every day. Now I get to run with you.”

Registration and festivities begin at 9:00 a.m., with the race starting at 10:00 a.m. Participants will receive a limited-edition WGVU trucker hat and participation medal. The event will include pre- and post-race refreshments, creating a fun, social atmosphere. It feels more like a community celebration than a traditional race.

WGVU Public Media is West Michigan’s public television, radio, and digital media organization, serving the region with trusted local news, educational children’s programming, cultural content, and community storytelling. Supported by viewers, listeners, and local partners, WGVU’s mission is to inform, inspire, and connect the communities it serves.

Most importantly, 100 percent of the proceeds support WGVU Public Media, helping fund local journalism, educational programming, and cultural content for West Michigan.

The Shelley Irwin Fun Run is not about finishing first. It’s about showing up, moving forward, and doing something good together as a community. To register online, visit wgvu.org/funrun for sign-up, deadlines, and event-day instructions.
