Barber’s nostalgic work for soprano and orchestra is a journey through summertime scenes of childhood innocence. Mahler’s set of four pieces for mezzo and orchestra follows a wayfarer who is sustained in life’s ups and downs by the joy and wonder of nature. Full of sunlight and happiness, Brahms’s dancelike Symphony no. 2 is often compared to Beethoven’s beloved and playful “Pastoral” Symphony.
