Grand Rapids proudly holds the title of Beer City, but it’s safe to say there is some major talent in crafting other libations. If you prefer a stiffer drink, throw on a suit or your little black dress and join Cocktail Week GR as it enters its fourth year of celebrating Michigan craft spirits.
“(This event) is meant to showcase Grand Rapids’ award-winning distilleries, in addition to the city’s expansive list of restaurants and bars that offer craft cocktails,” said Kate Lieto, Experience Grand Rapids director of marketing.
During this 12-day celebration, craft cocktail admirers can join the festivities by attending one of the many cocktail-themed events. Sip on an array of artfully crafted drinks while enjoying a bite to eat. Local distilleries and restaurants will feature specially made cocktails as well as recommended food pairings. Visit cocktailweekgr.com for a full list of locations, menus and events.
“Cocktail Week GR participants will feature a variety of classic cocktails and new creations in honor of the celebration,” Lieto said. “Participants create limited-time menus with a focus on Michigan spirits and unique offerings.”
If you’re just starting to take an interest in craft cocktails, this event keeps everyone in mind, from the craft spirit novice to the connoisseurs. With the number of offerings and pairings, it’s all but guaranteed that you’ll find something pleasing to the palette while adding a new favorite to order on your next night on the town.
“We're noticing that the interest in craft cocktails is rapidly increasing,” said Lieto. “We’re proud to shed a light on the local establishments that offer a wide variety of options for customers interested in the craft cocktail scene.”
Cocktail Week GR leads up to the Grand Rapids International Wine, Beer and Food Festival. The Festival, in its 11th year, has an expanded spirits collection and is hosted in DeVos Place’s Hemingway Hall. This is in tribute to Ernest Hemingway’s admiration for Michigan and its craft spirits.
During the International Wine, Beer and Food Festival, attendants will enjoy mixologists showcasing fine spirits from around the world, mixers, garnishes and cocktails.
“We were very excited when the festival decided to add a spirits selection, and we encourage people to include the International Wine, Beer and Food Festival in their Cocktail Week GR celebrations,” Lieto said.
