I think people who’ve lived in West Michigan their whole lives, like myself, might take summers here for granted.
Okay, yes, we spend at least 6 months of the year waiting for the season to come back around, but I mean really appreciating the uniquely gorgeous freshwater marvel we have in Lake Michigan.
You hear it from expats all the time, as they realize what they’ve lost. “Ugh, I miss the summers so much. It’s almost worth it just for that. But the winters…” and then they look off into the void.
Well, I for one am determined to soak up every second of sun and sand I can this summer. We have one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world right here, with dozens of beaches to choose from, and not a single one has jellyfish, stingrays, sharks or gators as far as I know. And I say that with all due respect to our aquatic friends.
That’s why, in this issue, you’ll find our Summer Bucket List, giving you more than enough ideas to plan for the months ahead—while keeping in mind that some of the season’s best events likely haven’t even been announced yet. We have ideas for scenic hikes, fun on the river, treetop adventures, places to see animals, outdoor movies, summer concert series, a drive along the coast, and so much more.
On top of that, we have our guide to dining and drinking outdoors on West Michigan’s best patios, an annual roundup of festivals, a look at farmers markets in the area, and an exploration of accessible activities around town.
Not to mention a behind-the-scenes look at Acrisure Amphitheater, a dive into the massive Chihuly exhibition at Meijer Gardens—likely to draw more than a million visitors—and interviews with bands both local and touring, including Goldfinger, saturdays at your place, and From Indian Lakes.
All right, enough talk. It’s time to get out there and bask in the sun.
'Til next time,
Josh Veal, Managing Editor
