Ready or not, the holidays have arrived.
Luckily, depending on when you’re reading this, there’s still plenty of runway. If you’re one of those people who’s a true Christmas Crusader, posting on June 25 that we’re “halfway there,” one month really isn’t enough time to soak up the entire holiday season. But between arts markets, light shows and holiday concerts, there are opportunities to celebrate as early as mid-November.
Even if you’re not a huge fan, chances are you still have to pick up some presents, and there’s no reason to wait. That’s why we put out our local gift guide right now, so you can get a head start instead of slowly feeling the panic set in over the next two months.
Today, there’s such a massive breadth of options for presents that it can feel paralyzing. You might google gift guides, or ask ChatGPT, and be met with a smattering of cheap novelty goods and overpriced gimmicks that vaguely align with what you know about the recipient. I’d say it’s the thought that counts, but let’s be honest, there’s not much thought going on there.
Or you can shop local, picking up truly one-of-a-kind gifts designed by artisans and/or curated by passionate experts. When you head to a boutique or holiday arts market (of which there are many this season), you can see and feel the item personally, avoiding scams, skipping uncertain shipping times, and assuring quality. Hopefully our Gift Guide will give you some direction of where to head!
In addition to all of the great holiday stuff—including a big roundup of events and performances, and a deeper dive into the Christkindl Market—you’ll find our annual Top 5 Albums of 2026, highlighting some of our favorites from local musicians.
We also talk with singer Molly Bouwsma Schultz about her new album, with TV chef Duff Goldman about his unique show in town, and with the Grand Rapids Symphony about their end-of-year concerts. Plus, a look at vegetarian and vegan eats across West Michigan!
Whether you’re a holiday superfan or wear earbuds everywhere in December to avoid all the Christmas music, we hope you get out there, embrace the spirit of togetherness and community, and perhaps most of all, support local.
'Til next time,
Josh Veal, Managing Editor
