For a few years, of Montreal's frontman Kevin Barnes lived in Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. with his parents. Unfortunately, it wasn't a "Pure Michigan" experience for him during that time.
"I didn't have a car, I wasn't going to shows. It was more like kidville, a child playing little league baseball," he said in a phone interview with REVUE.
Even though he's spent a decent chunk of time in Michigan, he said he has never been to Grand Rapids as either a Michigander or touring musician.
"I'm really excited to see the rapids, basically," he said about his tour stop at The Pyramid Scheme.
We had to break it to him that our rapids aren't that grand.
"We shouldn't bring our inner tubes or anything like that?"
Sorry.
The disappointment shouldn't be too tough to handle for a band that's known for its over-the-top stage theatrics and psychedelic albums. Because onan of Montreal tour, drama is what fuels the show.
"We definitely have a lot of tricks up our sleeve," Barnes said. "[There are] a lot of theatrical and visual aspects to the show that are going to be psychedelic, transportive, fun and engaging."
In true indie spirit, of Montreal's entire stage set is DIY and Barnes works closely with his brother, David, who not only creates the stage concepts, but whose art has appeared on a number of the band's album covers.
"When I'm on tour, it definitely is fun for me because then I can be more of an exhibitionist and wear wild costumes and strut around onstage."
In terms of Barnes' onstage persona, he likes to push the envelope of what is socially acceptable in our country.
"I think in our country, it has this puritanical root where everybody is told early on 'Don't expose yourself' and 'You should feel ashamed of your body' in a way," he said. "But at the same time, we're also overexposed to sexuality on television and in movies. It's a strange combination of things that really don't work together and it makes people confused."
We think Grand Rapids is ready to be confused.
