A new event venue, The Lake House, opened in Ludington at 704 Maritime Drive. The 5,800-square-foot venue sits on the water between the S.S. Badger dock and Harbor View Marina, offering views of Lake Michigan. There is a sizable outdoor patio with a fire pit and portable bar as well.
Beyond by Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus is a new clothing and outdoor lifestyle store in Ada, at 551 Settlers Drive, Suite 100. The store offers fashion-forward brands inspired by nature, meant to be perfect for casual outdoor experiences and adventures alike. Patagonia, Fjallraven, Canada Goose and Sorel are a few of the brands in stock here.
Smoke’n Tulip opened inside of Holland Civic Center Place, putting smoked meat strongly in the spotlight. This new eatery at 150 W. 8th St., Holland, offers entrees like smoked pork spareribs as well as handhelds like a smoked banh mi with salmon or pork. There are also small plates, salads, soups and more.
Muskegon’s Wonderland Distilling Co. got off the ground with its first spirit last month, launching its blended whiskey, made from three different kinds of straight whiskey — corn, rye and wheat. Look for bottles of it at a retailer near you as it rolls out. It’s smooth and flavorful, with a slight kick but not too much.
West Side Deli opened inside of Bridge Street Market at 405 Seward Ave. NW, Grand Rapids. If you’re a fan of Two Beards Deli and Cherry Deli, you’ll be familiar with the huge selection of sandwiches here. Whether you’re a meat lover, vegetarian, or vegan, there are tons of options for you, among them the Bridge St, with turkey, capicola, bacon, pepperjack, red onion, lettuce, tomato, and Dijon mayo on a sub bun.
There’s a new pizza place in town — the cheekily named Quarantino’s at 1444 Lake Drive SE. They’re bringing Detroit-style pizza to Grand Rapids with a variety of pies, like the Buffalo Chicken and Yes, We Have A Chicken Pesto Pizza. There’s also a vegan menu, with six animal-free varieties to choose from. Order online for pickup.

Social Kitchen & Bar vanished from the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids. The New American restaurant was a second location of a Birmingham eatery, offering excellent build-your-own salads and pizzas as well as craft cocktails and more. Sadly, it would seem the pandemic didn’t treat them well.
Similarly, Kingfisher Restaurant and Deli closed, right after winning third place for Best New Restaurant in this year’s Best of the West. The neighborhood eatery featured a menu focused on creative, “healthy-ish” food largely inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, like its predecessor, Marie Catrib’s. We have yet to hear word on new plans for the space.
