One of the many joys of Halloween (well, other than the candy, parties, costumes and did we say candy already?) are the classic horror movies. While a good horror movie is welcome any time, there's something special about immersing yourself in a cinematic All Hallows' Eve experience with a few dozen others sharing the same excitement.
Your favorite Bill Murray movie just got better. On Halloween, Kalamazoo's Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will screen a special quote-along Ghostbusters. Enjoy marshmallows as the gang defeats the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, throw bountiful amounts of glow sticks to impersonate their proton packs and slime yourself and friends to fully engage yourself in the experience. This is a one-time showing, beginning at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.
It's a fact William Friedkim directed one of the most terrifying horror movies of all time. And while many of us would like to forget our first Exorcist experience, there are some of us who are gluttons for punishment. Thanks to the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, we can re-live all those nights of relentless crying during special one-time Devil’s Night screening of The Exorcist at 8 p.m.
Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, The Shining, will be playing at Wealthy Theatre as part of the Meanwhile Movies film series. A horror classic about isolation, evil spirits and murder, The Shining has one of the most iconic images in cinema: Jack Nicholson’s face smashing through a door. The film starts at 8 p.m. Non-member tickets are $6 and members pay $5.
Celebration! Cinema knows how to do Rocky Horror Picture Show. The movie theatre screens the film this time every year and encourages viewers to get into the Rocky Horror mood. It's not just a viewing, it's an experience, with costumes, props, singing and quoting. The final showings are Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Tickets for the event are $5 per person.
In the spirit of the holiday, John Carpenter’s, Halloween makes a big-screen appearance at Carmikes Cinemas in Battle Creek. It’s showing on Devil’s Night at 7:30 p.m. and on Halloween at 11:30 p.m.
If gore, jigsaw puzzles and real-life allegories are your thing, Carmikes will also be showing Saw on Oct. 30. The movie starts at 10 p.m. in honor of its 10th anniversary. That’s right, 10 years of blood, guts and body parts. How old do you feel now?
