There’s an old saying, often attributed as an “ancient Chinese curse,” reserved for your worst enemies:

May you live in interesting times.

Boy oh boy, do we live in interesting times! Events are essentially nonexistent for the next month and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered that all restaurants and bars close dine-in service. But that doesn’t mean we have to spend a month cooking at home!

It’s going to be a tough time for a lot of us, especially small business owners and employees, but we can get through it together.

If you want to still see your favorite restaurants and breweries around in a couple of months, you should be supporting them right now. Many places are offering gift cards, which is one way to go, but you can also order takeout and delivery — which helps give the employees something to do, especially when you tip. And you should be tipping, heavily.

The news is constantly changing, but we’re keeping tabs on eateries and breweries that have specifically released statements on their plans for the quarantine. This list will be continuously updated as well as we can with the information we have.

New Hotel Mertens was one of the first places around to implement delivery, and they’re doing it entirely themselves. NHM also expanded its delivery zone to include a huge area around Grand Rapids. Order sandwiches, breakfast and even discounted WINE, all with a $1 delivery fee. You can even plan and order dinner, hours ahead of time!

Mokaya has introduced curbside pickup — same-day delivery to zip codes 49503, 49504, 49505, 49506 and 49507 — so you can still safely get your sweet treats! Curbside pickup is totally free and delivery is a $5 flat rate. All deliveries are being made from 4 to 6 p.m.

Pizza Places

Obviously, pizza places are already extremely well equipped to handle this crisis, so keep them in mind. Some spots, like Carlucci’s, are sanitizing their workspace every 30 minutes and even offer no-contact delivery so they can just leave your order on your doorstop. Nice work!
